Who Is Hospice Care For?

Hospice is for anyone with chronic illnesses that are expected to live for six months or less such as: lung disease, liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and much more.

How long Can Patients Be On Hospice?

Hospice is provided for patients who are expected to live six months or less. However, if the patient stays sufficient, hospice can be extended. Several reports indicate that patients receiving hospice care survive longer than hospice-appropriate patients receiving no hospice.

Where Is Hospice Care Provided?

Hospice is provided at patients' residences. This includes patients' homes, board and care, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

Who Provides Hospice Care? 

Hospice includes a team of professional caregivers:
Certified nurses, social workers, home health aide, chaplain and other volunteers if needed
The team makes regularly scheduled visits to care for the patient, and trains and educates family caregivers. For patients in an assisted living community or nursing home, the hospice team provides additional care that complements the care they are already receiving

Does Hospice Provide Medication? 

Hospice provides medications related to the patient's diagnosis to control specific symptoms. Hospice also provides pain management medications to control pain and improve patient’s quality of life.

Does Hospice Provide Medical Equipment & Supplies?

Hospice provides medical equipment and supplies such as: hospital beds, walkers, wheelchairs along with incontinent supplies.

What Is The Cost Of Hospice?

Medicare, Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) and most private insurance plans cover hospice 100% which means patients have no out of pocket costs. This includes home visits, medications, supplies and equipment related to the terminal diagnosis.
